A soccer referee died Saturday after a 17-year-old goalie punched him in the face because he was called for a foul and issued a yellow card.

Ricardo Portillo, 46, was refereeing a game on April 27 from a recreational soccer league in Taylorsville, a suburb in Salt Lake City, when he cited the player for an infraction. According to police, the yellow card made the goalie angry and he punched him, CNN reports.

Portillo reportedly started to vomit blood after feeling dizzy, reports the Salt Lake Tribune. He was taken to a hospital and his relatives thought he was going to recover quickly. However, doctors discovered that he had suffered serious internal head injuries and

He fell into a coma and died at 9:33 p.m. Saturday at Intermountain Medical Center.

The teenager is in a juvenile detention facility and will face more charges.

"Formal charges will be screened early next week with the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office. Since Portillo has passed away additional charges will be screened in connection with his death," a press release from the Unified Police Department said.

In an interview with ABC News, Portillo's daughters said soccer was his father's passion and they were angry at the player, even before their father's injuries got even worse.

"If he spends time in jail and forever, it's not enough, they are not going to bring my daddy back," she said in the interview.
