McDonald's McRib just might be embroiled in a Mc-battle this summer.

According to USA Today, Burger King will unveil its new summer menu this month, and its biggest highlight, the new BK Rib Sandwich, is drumming up comparisons to McDonald's famous sandwich.

The sandwich, a boneless rib patty on a sweet roll covered in butter pickles and tangy sauce, will be sold nationally beginning on May 21.

Other new items to be added include a line of Carolina BBQ sandwiches, the BBQ Chicken Salad, Oreo-infused desserts, and sweet potato fries.

The new summer menu also marks the return of the Memphis Pulled Pork, introduced to the menu just last year.

The BK Rib Sandwich has been in the works for months and was test-marketed in Shreveport, Louisiana. The price begins at $3.49 a la carte and $5.59 as meal with fries and a drink.

These new items will be available only through the summertime and market under the burger company's "Taste Is King" slogan.

Burger King's previous flirtation with rib products dates back to 2010, when the fast restaurant briefly sold Fire-Grilled Ribs. But the products' high price - as high as $9 for some markets - meant it didn't sell to the widest audience.

The company's vice president of global innovation Eric Hirschhorn believes these new additions reflect consumers' desire for new options. "Our guests have grown to look for a variety of options. It's not just about beef anymore, but other proteins like chicken and turkey and pork."

But McDonald's need not fear the Rib Sandwich, says BurgerBusiness.com editor Scott Hume. "That McDonald's has been bringing back McRib for 32 years tells you it's popular and important," said Hume. "[But] I think McRib has such loyal fans that no one else's rib sandwich will hurt it, even if Burger King's is really good."
