The ending is near for NBC's hit comedy, The Office.  The mockumentary-style series' finale will air as a one-hour special on Thursday following a successful nine season run.

NBC gave a synopsis for what the finale will entail: "the workers of Dunder Mifflin, past and present, gather for a wedding and a final round of interviews. Mysteries are solved, hatchets are buried, pranks are prunked."

The New York Times revealed that the characters who work for Stanton-based Dunder Mifflin paper company will come together in a reunion-style reality show and offer their reactions to seeing themselves on television. They will be reviewing the footage from a production company that has been filming all nine seasons for a "documentary" about the Dunder Mifflin staff called The Office: An American Workplace.

The show's director revealed more spoilers: "the finale is about the fallout from the broadcast of the documentary that the team has been working on."

Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy blog spoke to Ken Kwapis who directed the series finale as well as the show's very first episode.

Kwapsi told Speakeasy that he didn't want to "give too much away," but the series finale is "plot heavy... every character in the ensemble reacts differently to having their lives broadcast on television."

He admitted that while it was challenging "juggling a lot of storylines" for the show's last episode into a one-hour special, he said it was great to have a "number of sequences that involved everyone together."

"There's a sense of getting to see the whole group interact in ways that are emotionally satisfying," he added.

The series finale will also include a wedding, a conclusion to Dwight's proposal to his longterm crush and co-worker Angela in last week's episode. Kwapsi confirmed the return of previous characters in that segment because "the wedding is one of the big set pieces that gives the audience a chance to touch base with a lot of characters, some of whom they haven't seen for a long time," he revealed.

Wetpaint  listed additional previous characters including: B.J. Novak (Ryan), Andy Buckley (David Wallace), Bobby Ray Shafer (Bob Vance), Mike Schur (Mose Schrute) and Matt Jones (Dwight's cousin Zeke) and celebrity guest stars include Rachael Harris, Dakota Johnson, Joan Cusack, Ed Begley Jr. and Malcolm Barrett.

The Office series finale will air at 8/7c on NBC.
