Police arrested eight people after a fight broke out at a Kindergarten graduation ceremony Friday at an elementary school in Cleveland, Ohio.

The fight happened at Michael R. White Elementary School when two juvenile girls who did not attend the school got into an argument over spilled punch. They started to fight and the families of the girls reportedly intervened and it turned into a melee. The Associated Press reports that someone called police when one participant pulled out a pipe and another a hammer.

"You had adults fighting adults, juvies fighting juvies, and so forth," Cleveland police commander Wayne Drummond told the Associated Press. "You just had a melee here."

Drummond said the first 911 call came in as a report that someone fired a shot but that came out not to be true.

The eight people arrested were almost female and were charged with aggravated rioting. There was no one injured, according to The Associated Press.

The elementary school was in lock down after the brawl erupted and parents were called in to pick up their children.

The children were gathered for the end-of-the-year ceremony.

"It's just sad that it was marred by some adults who should be setting an example for the kids of how to behave but who did quite the opposite," Drummond told NBC News.
