The Civil Wars 'The One That Got Away' New Song, LISTEN; New Album on August 6
Folk group The Civil Wars premiered the first single off their new self-titled album Tuesday on YouTube and iTunes.
The One That Got Away is a melancholic lament about love gone wrong. Instead of the usual meaning of the "one that got away" phrase, such as the one featured in the Katy Perry song, this one features the singers wishing that their significant other was "the one that got away."
The duo is made up of John Paul White and Joy Williams, who met at a songwriting session in Nashville in 2008. Each of them sings in different parts of The One That Got Away.
"I never meant to get us in this deep," Williams begins, "I never meant for this to mean a thing." White soon joins her In harmony.
"I wish I'd never ever seen your face," Williams sings in the chorus, "I wish you were the one that got away."

The Civil Wars rose to fame after singing Safe and Sound with Taylor Swift for the Hunger Games soundtrack. Their 2011 debut album Barton Hollow was a success financially and critically, selling over 500,000 copies and winning Grammys for Best Folk Album and Best Country/Duo Group Performance for the album's title track.
The group cancelled their entire tour in November 2012, citing "internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition" as the main reasoning. Though they mentioned that they hoped to release new music in 2013, many had assumed that the duo was going to go their separate ways.
It was announced in May that The Civil Wars would be releasing their second album, aptly titled The Civil Wars, in August.
"A lot of soul sweat and tears went into its creation," Williams said in a statement. "I hope you feel the heart in each song, that it might connect with yours. We are, each one of us, all journeying, learning and growing along this ever-evolving path."
"Patience is a virtue," White said in his own statement. "Yours has been appreciated. Here's to the hope you consider it rewarded."
The Civil Wars is expected to be released on August 6.
The album was made available for iTunes preorder at midnight on Monday.
