Singer Katy Perry landed her first Vogue cover for its July 2013 isue, and got very candid in her interview with the publication, especially about her marriage.

Of ex-husband Russell Brand, the singer told the magazine that once upon a time, the comedian was "a magical... very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him."

She continued bluntly to discuss the undoing of their relationship, even outside of marriage.

"Let's just say I haven't heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011," the singer told the magazine, recalling a time when he allegedly insulted her in one of his comedy routines when she visited him as a surprise.

She said she suspected that Brand may have considered the balance of fame and power in their marriage to be a threat.

"At first when I met him he wanted an equal, and I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal and they're like, I can't handle the equalness," she continued.

While she does not claim faultlessness in the divorce, she said she's learned to reconcile the experience: "I let go and I was like: This isn't because of me; this is beyond me. So I have moved on from that."

Perry seems to value her current state of independence and rather than wallow over her past, is focusing on the things she loves -- starting with her music. The singer is starting to compile a new album, the follow-up to 2010's Teenage Dream. Though she admitted that a new project was only in the most initial phase, the subject of her new music often has Perry feeling the most neurotic.

"Of course I get fazed," the singer said, when asked how she manages her career. She feels doubt, over her success, she admitted.

"And then I go back into the studio and I start writing, and the true essential oil of who I am comes bubbling back up and reminds me that it's always been inside of me, that nobody can take this away no matter what comment anyone makes.

"It's going to be there because it's what I was born with and it's what I've worked on my whole life," Perry added.
