Fans of the CW's Arrowverse got a significant holiday surprise on Dec. 13 when they learned that Colton Hayes would be returning to Arrow.

Many More Happy Returns

After months of speculation, Arrow executive producers Marc Guggenheim and Wendy Mericle revealed that one of the show's most popular characters would be returning to the superhero series.

"We're thrilled to announce that Colton Haynes will be reprising his role as Roy Harper for a short arc on Arrow this year." The producers said in a statement.

Haynes joined the CW series during Season One after he left the popular MTV drama Teen Wolf. While Hayes played one of the show's polarizing figures, lacrosse player Jackson Whittemore, fans instant warmed up to Roy Harper, who became one of Green Arrow (Stephen Amell)'s protégés.

Arsenal's History And Comeback

The audience watched as Haynes' Roy Harper transformed into Arsenal. Arsenal spent several seasons on Green Arrow's team he assisted Team Arrow in facing off against threats such as Slade Wilson (Manu Bennett) and Ra's Al Ghul (Matthew Nable). Harper disappeared when Haynes' contract with the show was not renewed. Show producers coyly hinted what is bringing Arsenal back to Star City.

"Roy is called back to Star City to help resolve an urgent matter with high stakes for the team." The Arrow executive producers stated. "His short visit turns into something surprising when he reunites with Thea and sparks a change in both of their lives that will have long-lasting consequences..."

Haynes was not the only fan-favorite to return to the popular CW superhero series. The show briefly welcomed back Bennett's Slade Wilson at the end of the fifth season, before making one final appearance this season. Haynes' comeback to the CW series also comes at the best possible time as Arrow continues to deal with Arrowverse co-developer Andrew Kreisberg's departure. Warner Bros. Television terminated Kreisberg after sexual allegations against him were brought forward.

Haynes' Busy Year

Haynes had a busy 2017. In addition to participating in the latest edition of American Horror Story: Cult, he reprised the role of Jackson Whittemore during the final episodes of MTV's Teen Wolf. He also appeared in the critically panned Rough Night with Scarlet Johansson, Kate McKinnon, and Demi Moore. Haynes even got engaged (and later married) his partner, Jeff Leatham.

While Haynes' first airdate has not been announced, Arrow is expected to return to the CW on Jan. 18.
