Aaron Hernandez Fiance: Charges May Result In Her Testimony [PHOTOS]
While media reports have concentrated on accused murderer Aaron Hernandez and his alleged victim Odin Lloyd, little attention has been given to Hernandez's girlfriend, Shayanna Jenkins, and the role she could potentially play in his case.
There's a possibility Jenkins could be called to testify during her boyfriend's trial. Prosecutor Bill McCauley laid out the state's evidence against Hernandez, and according to his report, Jenkins initially cooperated with the Massachusetts State Police's investigation. However, she reportedly stopped cooperating at Hernandez's request.
Massachusetts state law states Jenkins would not have to testify against Hernandez if the couple were married when she potentially takes the stand.
"A spouse shall not be compelled to testify in the trial of an indictment, complaint, or other criminal proceeding brought against the other spouse," the law sates.
Jenkins and Hernandez are high school sweethearts who attended Bristol Central High School together and have been a couple since 2007. The couple had their first child, Avielle Janelle, in November 2012 and they reportedly were engaged the same year. Little else in known about Jenkins, and she is yet to make a public statement, but cameras captured her sobbing during her boyfriend's bail hearing.
The couple's pictures show a more gentle side to Hernandez, who has remained mostly stoic in his court proceedings.
On Thursday Hernandez was denied bail by Massachusetts Superior Court judge Renee Dupuis. Dupuis said she wasn't comfortable releasing the former pro athlete to house arrest because of the nature of his alleged crime.
"I think the commonwealth has presented a case that's circumstantial, to be sure, but very, very strong," Dupuis said.
Two of Hernandez's accused accomplices in the alleged homicide were arrested this week. Prosecutors said the men, Ernest Wallace and Carlos Ortiz, appeared on surveillance cameras from Hernandez's home carrying firearms the day Lloyd was murdered.
