As revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, Aquaman star Jason Mamoa is in final talks with Warner Bros. to star in their upcoming live action Minecraft movie.

Based on the popular video game by Mojang Studios, the Minecraft film has been in development at Warner Bros. for years. However, recently, the film has confirmed Jared Hess as director - best known for writing and directing the cult classic Napoleon Dynamite.

First fully released in 2011, Minecraft is a video game known for its unique blocky aesthetic, and allows players to explore a world and build their own structures, tools, items, and simple machines.

Along with the different game modes that players can choose, Minecraft is potentially best loved for giving players the ability to modify the game to create new gameplay mechanics, items, and assets. This has allowed Minecraft be used in educational settings and is often considered one greatest video games of all time. Microsoft bought Mojang and the Minecraft IP in 2014 for 2.5 billion dollars.

While details on the direction the movie will take are scarce, the producing team has been revealed. According to The Hollywood Reporter:

Dune producers Mary Parent and Roy Lee will produce, with Jill Messick receiving a posthumous producing credit for developing the film before her death in 2018. Mojang's Lydia Winters and Vu Bui are also producing the film."

With so much work and time spent in development, we hope the best for Minecraft. We look forward to Warner Bros.'s take on the popular game, especially with the recent success video game movies have seen in cinemas, such as with Ryan Reynolds' Free Guy and Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
