Man Crawls Off Plane: Disabled Man Baraka Kanann Claims Delta Airlines Forced Him to Crawl Off Aircraft
A partially paralyzed man is reportedly suing Delta Airlines for apparently forcing him to crawl on and off his flights.
D. Baraka Kanann of Haiku, Hawaii, claims he had to crawl across the tarmac because he wasn't provided equipment he needed to board and exit the plane, ABC News reported on July 29.
Kanaan, 40, reportedly filed a lawsuit in District Court in Hawaii against the airline and 20 of their employees. The July 23 filed suit claims he is seeking damages after he endured physical and emotional suffering from the incident.
ABC News reported that Kanaan claimed Delta subjected him to outrageous treatment on his flight to Nantucket, Mass. on July 27, 2012 and his flight back to Maui, Hawaii two days later.
The Hawaii man allegedly called Delta weeks before his flight to Massachusetts to warn them that he would need an aisle chair, as well as a lift to get him off the plane and into his wheelchair. Kanaan, who suffered partial paralysis of his legs after a 2000 car accident, claims the airline told him his needs would be accommodated.
Apparently when he landed at Nantucket Airport the flight attendant told him the airline didn't have the equipment to help him and that the crew couldn't get him off the plane. As a result, Kannan was "forced to crawl down the aisle of the airplane, down the stairs of the aircraft and across the tarmac to his wheelchair without any assistance," ABC News reported the complaint read.
Kannan claims he reported the issue to Delta who explained he'd be given assitance on his trip home, but the same issue happened again.
The only thing Delta offered him was "a piece of cardboard to put down so his clothes wouldn't get dirty," according to the lawsuit.
ABC News reported that under the Air Carrier Access Act, the airline is required to provide passengers "with a lift, aisle chair and other equipment as needed or requested," according to the suit.
The Delta disability desk reportedly offered to compensate Kanaan with 25,000 miles and $100 voucher, but the complaint states the offer wasn't enough compared to his fears that he'd be forced to crawl off the plane again if he flew with the airline.
