A new portrait of Kate Middleton was not well-received by the netizens.

On Wednesday, Tatler magazine revealed its July 2024 cover showing a new portrait of the Princess of Wales depicting "strength and dignity" amid her cancer treatment. Per the post, it was made by British-Zambian artist Hannah Uzor.

However, netizens and royal fans were not impressed by Uzor's work.

"It was supposed to showcase the Princess of Wales' 'strength and dignity' -- but has instead been described as 'absolutely dreadful,' tweeted one X user.

"This is dreadful -- not at all like the beautiful Princess Catherine. Tatler, how could you have allowed such a dreadfully poor image to be on your cover? Appalling error of judgement" wrote another.

"This portrait is awful, there are so many amazing artists out there. Surely, they could have found a better one," said a different netizen on Tatler's Instagram post.

"Who is making decisions on these commissions? The portraits are getting weirder and weirder. This is quite amateurish, and does not resemble HRH. Considering what she's going through, I guess this will give her a good chuckle," read another comment.

"[This is] a very horrible portrait which totally fails to represent the beauty and elegance of the Princess of Wales," opined a different person.

"I am not a Kate fan, but that portrait is an insult," said someone else.

"TATLER, this is embarrassing! It's NOT the fact that it looks Asian. It's because it looks NOTHING like her!" remarked a different netizen.

"This cover doesn't do Princess Kate justice at all. This painting doesn't even communicate life. Princess Kate is light," another netizen chimed in.

The controversial portrait was reportedly inspired by Middleton's look during King Charles III's first state banquet at Buckingham Palace on Nov. 22, 2022.

Talking about the portrait, its creator, Uzor, said, "All my portraits are made up of layers of personality, constructed from everything I can find about them."

"It's really important to capture the soul of the person. So I spent a lot of time looking at her, looking at her pictures, watching videos of her, seeing her with her family, seeing her [on] diplomatic visits, seeing her when she's rowing or visiting children in a hospice. It's been really interesting for me to get a sense of who she is," she described her process in creating the portrait despite never meeting Kate.

"When you can't meet the sitter in person, you have to look at everything you can find and piece together the subtle human moments revealed in different photographs."
