A new Ed Sheeran song titled I See Fire, written for the soundtrack of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, was released Wednesday.

The stripped-down acoustic sound allows Sheeran's voice to deeply resound and echo with clarity. The video intersperses bits of the recording session -- shot in black and white -- with clips from the film.

"Watch the flames burn on and on the mountain side/Desolation comes upon the sky/I see fire inside the mountain/I see fire burning the trees," he softly croons as the rich string section takes over.

Toward the end of the song, the city is seen being consumed by a destructive fire.

Sheeran shared the video and song via Twitter.

"I got the chance to produce and play all the instruments on it apart from the cello. Managed to learn violin for a day, hope you all dig it," he tweeted on Nov. 4, building anticipation for the track.

The song is available to purchase on iTunes, while the Desolation of Smaug soundtrack is currently available for pre-order ahead of its Dec. 10 release date.

In the film, Bilbo and his troop of dwarfs head toward the Lonely Mountain to reclaim their homeland and Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) encourages them to fight Samug the Dragon (Benedict Cumberbatch). Bard the Bowman (Luke Evans) plays a key role in the film and the character will be reprised in the next installment, There and Back Again. Legolas (Orlando Bloom) will also feature in the last film of the trilogy but the nature of his role, which could also just be a cameo, isn't known yet.
