While Maggie (Michelle Monaghan) has stayed in the background of True Detective since the beginning of the season, she will gradually rise to prominence in the last few episodes.

Monaghan recently spoke with IndieWire about her Maggie and why she should not be underestimated by either Hart (Woody Harrelson) or Cohle (Matthew McConaughey).

"We continue to see as the series progresses more of Maggie's strength unveiled, episode after episode," Monaghan said. "You really kind of discover ultimately how cunning and devastating she is and both of the men truly make the mistake of underestimating her."

Monaghan's Maggie will step into the forefront in the next episode of True Detective, which is titled Haunted Houses. She is seen in the promo for the episode being questioned by the present-day detectives Papania (Tory Kittles) and Gilbough (Michael Potts).

Maggie is asked about Cohle's behavior, to which she responds that she knew him to be a good man. It is not clear if she is trying to manipulate the detectives or if she's telling the truth.

As the series moves forward, Maggie's desire to keep her family intact makes her feel increasingly frustrated, according to Monaghan.

"And she clearly gives Martin an out, on a couple of different occasions. I think as a result of his disillusionment, he underestimates her. And that's really upsetting to her," she revealed.

True Detective airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.
