While it had already been announced that True Detective is an anthology series that will have a different cast and location each season, McConaughey confirmed that he would not be appearing in True Detective past season 1.

"I won't be back for season two. Season one was finite." McConaughey said at the Oscars Sunday. The current debut season of True Detective features McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as a pair of detectives embroiled in a 17-year murder case.

HBO aired the seventh episode of the season Sunday night at the same time as the Oscars, prompting McConaughey to discuss the episode.

"It's probably airing right now," he said. "Has anyone seen it?I made the thing... and I'm not sure what happens."

The episode that aired Sunday night is the penultimate episode of season 1 and the finale will air Sunday, March 9.

The actor also discussed the current state of television.

"It's a different time in television," he said. "There's not that feeling of if you're having a successful film career and somebody brings up something on television we didn't know, at the time when I got it, where it was going to be. All I knew is I read the first two episodes, and I was in. And I was just, at the time, looking for quality."

The success of True Detective among critics and audiences could attract similar movie stars to act in a season of the show. Show creator Nic Pizzolatto hinted that the second season may have female detectives. However, HBO has not yet renewed the show despite high ratings.

True Detective airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.
