True Detective aired its season 1 finale Sunday night, giving viewers closure on Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson) while also leaving them anticipating season 2.

True Detective is reportedly following an anthology forma, with each season being a self-contained story and no crossover into other seasons. This means that the season 1 finale is the last time viewers will see Rust and Marty and the Yellow King mystery.

Nic Pizzolatto, who created and writes True Detective, spoke with HitFix about the series and teased some big details when asked what was ahead for season 2.

"Okay. This is really early, but I'll tell you (it's about) hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system," Pizzolatto said.

It isn't clear if Pizzolatto was kidding with this answer, but he also said that the reaction to season 1 caused him to realize what he needed to do for season 2.

"It's informed exactly one thing. It's that I realize I need to keep being strange," he said. "Don't play the next one straight."

Much of the speculation surrounding season 2 was that it would center on two female detectives. A Twitter user recently asked Pizzolatto about True Detective's depiction of women, to which he responded:

"One of the detriments of only having two POV characters, both men (a structural necessity). Next season..."

This suggests female detectives as a strong possibility, though the creator has since deleted his response tweet.

True Detective has not yet been officially renewed for season 2 by HBO, but the success of the show makes a renewal relatively likely.
