A massive explosion at two Manhattan apartment buildings left two people dead and at least 22 others injured on Wednesday.

According to reports, two people are currently in the hospital with life-threatening injuring, while five more are in serious condition. 15 others have been treated for minor injuries.

Others are still missing after the explosion resulted in a fire which ripped through the buildings, and rescuers are searching through the remains to see if more people can be located.

"There are a number of people missing," Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a news conference. "I emphasize that those who are missing could well be safe in another location and just not contacted yet or reachable yet."

"This is a tragedy of the worst kind," he added. "There was no indication in time to save people."

The explosion reportedly came from a gas leak that had been reported to Con Edison, but the explosion happened before the company could arrive on the scene to address the problem.

Witnesses described the incident as unlike anything they had seen before.

"I saw a lady running with no shoes on," one witness said. "It was crazy. It was like a war zone...I thought it was an earthquake. I got calls from my family who felt it too and that was all the way uptown."

"The whole building shook," reported another witness on the scene.
