Doctor Who return to Lanzarote is causing quite a stir.

Is The Doctor Really Half Human? Should His Lineage Be Mentioned In New 'Who'?

The iconic sci-fi series announced on Sunday that it would be moving production to the Spanish island in order to film scenes for an upcoming Peter Harness penned episode. Doctor Who is no stranger to the Canary Islands, but BBC program has not utilized this locale since 1984's "Planet of Fire."

While a follow-up to the Fifth Doctor's (Peter Davison) adventure could be on the horizon, Peter Capaldi's (Twelfth Doctor) previous involvement in season 4's "Fires of Pompeii" episode could also provide viewers with an interesting throwback episode.

Will Matt Smith & David Tennant Team Up Again On 'Doctor Who'? The Eleventh Doctor Talks Possibility

Showrunner Steven Moffat has given statements that reflect both possibilities.

"For the first time since 1984, the Doctor Who production team is heading to Lanzarote," Moffat informed the BBC. "The Doctor is returning to the scene of an old adventure - but there have been sinister changes since his last visit."

Although this seems to indicate that the episode will indeed focus on the world from "Planet of Fire," Capaldi's role as Caecilius in "Fires of Pompeii" and later casting as the newest Doctor has made fans eager for a link between the two (see video below). Russell T. Davis, who was the showrunner during season 4, and Moffat have acknowledged that this possible plot is a real possibility.

"I remember Russell [T Davies] told me that he had a big old plan as to why there were two Peter Capaldi's in the Who universe: one in Pompeii and one in Torchwood," Moffat informed Nerd3 last year. "When I cast Peter and Russell got in touch to say how pleased he was, I said, 'Okay, what was your theory and does it still work?" and he said, 'Yes it does. Here it is..."

It looks like fans will have to wait until Doctor Who returns to the BBC later this year to find out which - if either - storyline will play out.
