Agents of SHIELD's Leo Fitz is in jeopardy, both in life and in love.

'Agent Carter' TV Show To Portray A 'Very Different Facet' Of Hayley Atwell's Agent Over 8 Episodes

The engineer was willing to confess his love for Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) and give his live to save her in the ABC series' freshman finale, but his loyal partner determinedly pulled him with her from the ocean (see video below). Fortunately, the nearly lifeless Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) was quickly transferred to Nick Fury's (Samuel L. Jackson) medical team. Unfortunately, he was not well enough to meet up with Coulson's (Clark Gregg) team as the episode came to a close.

As fans wait for SHIELD to return next September, series co-creator Jed Whedon has dropped a few hints about the fate of FitzSimmons.

"Well, we know how [Fitz] feels," Whedon informed BuzzFeed. "But we're not positive how he made it through - or how far he made it through. There are still some questions to be answered there."

However, the pair's heart wrenching life or death situation has been in the works since Henstridge and De Caestecker auditioned for the roles.

"When they initially auditioned, there were a lot of funny scenes, and when we wrote the emotional scene it was just to make sure they had the ability to pull it off, and both of them broke our heart when they auditioned," Whedon said, according to BuzzFeed. "They have this brother-sister inseparable feeling between them, but we wanted to evolve Fitz past that and have him break your heart in a different way. We shot those scenes very quickly and they just absolutely nailed it."
