After a long battle with Lewy Body dementia and other health ailments, legendary radio icon Casey Kasem has passed away.
Jean Kasem Calls Husband Casey 'Terminally Ill' As Caregiver Battle Wages On With Children?
The America's Top 40 host, who also made several appearances on television shows and worked as a voice actor, passed away in the early hours on Father's Day at the age of 82, his daughter Kerri confirmed on her Twitter page.
"Early this Father's Day morning, our dad Casey Kasem passed away surrounded by family and friends. Even though we know he is in a better place and no longer suffering, we are heartbroken. Thank you for all your love, support and prayers. The world will miss Casey Kasem, and incredible talent and humanitarian; we will miss our Dad. With love, Kerri, Mike and Julie," she wrote June 15.
Kasem, who also voiced Shaggy on Scooby-Doo, Robin on Superfriends, Alexander Cabot II on Josie and the Pussycats, Peter Cottontail on Here Comes Peter Cottontail, various Transformers on Transformers, Mark on Battle of the Planets, and various characters on Sesame Street, has been a media focus for some time due to a battle over his healthcare that has been waged between his children and his wife, Jean -- a battle that could now be reignited after his death.
TMZ reports that despite Kerri being his conservator while he was alive and having full control over his care, Kasem reportedly gave those rights to his wife after death in his will and left his children with no say in the matter. This could result in a continuation of the battle they have engaged in the last few months over his funeral arrangements and burial.
His children and wife of 33 years have been engaged in the battle over his care since October of last year, after Kasem signed a health directive in 2007 which not only gave his daughter control, but requested he not be kept alive by artificial means. The battle became news after Jean reportedly no longer allowed Kasem's children with first wife Linda Myers to see their father, resulting in a massive protest outside his home. The case took a bizarre turn when his children reported him missing in May, after he had been moved by Jean from a Santa Monica nursing home and was found one day later at a friend's home in Kitsap County, Wash.
Just days before his death, a Los Angeles judge reversed an earlier decision that allowed Jean to continue caring for Kasem and gave Kerri the authority to have doctors end his infusions of water, food and medicine, after his doctor concluded that continuing the artificial nutrition and hydration would only "at best prolong the dying process for him and will certainly add suffering to an already uncomfortable dying process," Kerri's lawyer, Troy Martin said after the June 11 ruling.
