Eureka actor Colin Ferguson has been cast for a big role on season 6, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He will appear in the premiere episode as Tripp, a "handsome, strong and disciplined" character, who is also in charge of a community militia. Executive producer Julie Plec also teased that Tripp will have it out for Sheriff Forbes, played by Marguerite MacIntyre. "He's in town to give Sheriff Forbes a run for her money. #TVD," she wrote on Twitter on Monday.

Newcomer Gabrielle Walsh will also star as Sarah, who has "spunk, street smart and a shady agenda," according to Deadline. The character may have a recurring role after her first appearance on the season premiere.

Walsh, a Chicago native, previously starred in Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones as Marisol Vargas.

Season 5 of Vampire Diaries was full of major twists and turns, including the death of lead characters Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) and Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham). Plec previously revealed that both characters will return for season 6, but she didn't reveal in what capacity.

The sixth season of The Vampire Diaries premieres on Oct. 2 at 8/7c.
