Spike TV is getting into the historical miniseries game in earnest.

Top Irish Actors In Hollywood

On Wednesday, Entertainment Weekly reported that the self-described channel for men is working on a show about the Crusades, fittingly called The Crusaders. The show is being produced by Irish DreamTime, which is Pierce Brosnan's production company. Brosnan will be one of a handful of executive producers, but it is not known whether or not he will have anything more to do with the show.

The channel is choosing the phrase "event-series" over miniseries, but in the end either way it is a limited series, and presumably Spike TV hopes that will engage people's interest, or at the very least limit the possible negative impact if it doesn't work out. The Crusaders will take place during the 12th century, and focus on two nights on a journey to the Holy Land.

Ben Kingsley Joins King Tut Miniseries

This is not the only show set in the distant past that Spike TV has announced recently. The network has also unveiled their plans for another miniseries about the life of King Tut set in Ancient Egypt. That show already has Ben Kingsley attached to it, while The Crusaders has yet to get any names of that note signed on. They will likely try and make a similar impact, and recent history shows that big names are willing to make the move to television if their attachment is limited.

Spike TV has largely been in the reality TV game when it comes to original programming in recent years. Clearly, they are looking to make a splash in the scripted world, and their first big foray is going to be shows about King Tut and The Crusades. It's a worthwhile gamble, but will it pay off?
