While it has been relatively quiet on the X-Men: Apocalypse front, it looks like director Bryan Singer and writer Simon Kinberg are teasing fans with a possible storyline from the comics that could come into play during the movie.

'X-Men: Days of Future Past' Star Signed For Five More Films

In a picture taken on Singer's Instagram, the director is sitting with Kinberg and X2 writers Michael Doughtery and Dan Harris with artwork from the Age of Apocalypse comic books on the computer screen.

In the comic books, Age of Apocalypse follows Professor Xavier's son Legion, who travels back in time with the intention of killing Magneto. However, Legion traveled to a time when Magneto and Xavier were still friends. As Xavier dies trying to protect Magneto, Legion vanishes, and a new time-line is created. The only person aware of how history has changed is Bishop, a time traveling mutant who followed Legion.

Bryan Singer Could Mix Old & New With The Four Horsemen In 'X-Men: Apocalypse'

This would tie into the Days of Future Past storyline where Xavier (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) are still friends, especially since both actors are expected to return for the film as well. This also makes sense because Bishop, played by Omar Sy, has been featured previously and was a major character in Days of Future Past as well.

Following Xavier's death in the comics, Magneto comes to believe in his late friend's dream of a peaceful coexistence between humans and mutants. Apocalypse was monitoring the fight and chooses that moment as the perfect time to begin his world conquest, leading to him taking over North America.

This leads to Magneto assembling the X-Men to fight Apocalypse and ties into plot lines that includes mutants such as Nightcrawler, Mystique, Colossus, and Blink, who have all appeared before in some capacity in the franchise (the last three were all in Days of Future Past).

If this is what Singer and the writers are hinting at, it would make sense due to the massive team-up and timeline of the comic stories. It is already confirmed that Fassbender, McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult would be returning as is Hugh Jackman and Evan Peters, making the storyline and Singer's picture all tie together.

If that's the case, it looks like Singer and Kinberg will be dealing with alternate time-lines once again and the possibility that McAvoy's Xavier could die during the movie. It also is worth mentioning that the last time Harris and Doughtery worked on a script was X2, which introduced Nightcrawler.

X-Men: Apocalypse is set to hit theaters on May 27, 2016.
