With the growing sense that nostalgia is what is selling in Hollywood today, a Power Rangers reboot was set to be produced by Roberto Orci, who is king of such nostalgia trips as Transformers and Star Trek, and the help of other superhero movie writers.

Former 'Power Rangers' Star Unsure On Movie Role, Wants Solo Film

The Hollywood Reporter reported the news on July 15 that Orci would assist X-Men: First Class writers Zack Stenz and Ashley Miller with a script that built off of the Might Morphin Power Rangers television series, with a mix of old and new elements.

Orci went on the record and said that one of his goals with the reboot is to tie it into the original series as much as possible. He told IGN in July that "one of the first things we did was learn and read. They have 600 pages of research that they have on their stuff. We read through the synopsis of everything they did and we are actually taking into account quite a bit of the canon in a real way."

Orci added that building off of fans' nostalgia is one of the keys to making the reboot work. "Part of it is seeing what we remember of it; our generation and what our memories of it are. Part of it is seeing the fans of it today. There are a lot of kids that love it today, and so it's about doing your homework," Orci said.

"We have the added benefit of a movie is going to be two hours, or whatever it is, so it's gotta have an arc and a reality to it that maybe you don't have a chance to do all the time."

While nothing casting wise has been confirmed, names such as Liam Hemsworth, Taylor Lautner, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Liam Neeson have popped up as possible members of the new Power Rangers cast. Fan favorites like Austin St. John and Jason David Frank have also shown an interest in returning to the franchise in some capacity and Orci's comments about continuity in the franchise seem to aid their claims.

As of now the Power Rangers reboot does not have a release date set.
