Sigrid Mueller started as a pretty minor character during Boardwalk Empire's second season on HBO, but since then she's developed into a complicated, surprisingly bold woman in her own right.

'Boardwalk Empire' Gets New Trailer For Final Season

On Tuesday actress Christiane Seidel sat down with AfterBuzz TV to discuss what it's been like playing Sigrid on the series (featured below).

"I love the fact that I could play a Scandinavian, a Norwegian, because I'm half Danish…" explained Seidel, who does not share her character's thick, distinct accent. "That was an honor to do, because I never get to do that."

Danish on her mother's side, the actress was able to learn a lot of the old songs she needed to know for the character from her mother. "It was a way to connect with my mom too," she added.

Seidel claimed that her parents have always been supportive, even if they didn't encourage acting from the very beginning. She put on performances for her family as a child and dreamed of moving to New York City, though the idea was very "foreign" to her non-artist parents.

As for her role on Boardwalk Empire, Seidel didn't tell her parents until her first day of production. They weren't living in the United States at the time and had never heard of the show, but after watching a few episodes quickly became invested in the prohibition drama.

With the series coming to a close this fall, Seidel is amazed that her character is not only still relevant, but also still alive. Like many others on the high-body-count program, the actress's "biggest fear" was Sigrid would die.

Instead, Sigrid evolved and developed from a simple nanny to the wife of Nelson Van Alden (Michael Shannon) and the mother of his second child with a surprisingly dark side.

"She's really strong, and she knows what she wants and needs in this life…as an actor, that's amazing if you get to go through different layers and you're not just always doing the same thing…" explained Seidel in discussing her character. "She's so strong and she knows what she wants and needs in this life."

Seidel admitted that the HBO role was her first big job, and it has been an "incredible experience" that she will never forget.

Boardwalk Empire returns to HBO for a fifth and final season Sunday, September 7 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
