While his name has appeared on every wish-list for the next big franchise recently, this could be the one to finally reel in British star Benedict Cumberbatch to the superhero genre.

DC Sets 'No Jokes' Rule For Their Superhero Movies

Earlier this week, MoviePilot speculated a few names that could make for a great addition to the Justice League cast as Martian Manhunter and at the top of their list was The Hobbit and Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch.

Cumberbatch has long been attached to superhero movies, with his most recent rumors tied with the lead role in Doctor Strange. But the star has yet to commit to a big budget franchise with other properties gaining his attention.

Batman Could Have Kryptonite To Help Or Use Against Superman In 'Justice League'

"I had to find someone that could, not only, play an alien, but a detective as well. Cumberbatch can play an amazing detective, as seen by his Emmy award-winning performance as Sherlock Holmes," the site speculated.

"He also has to feel a bit alien in nature, which he also embodies as Sherlock with his otherworldly presence and intellect. To top it all off, he has one of the most intriguing voices in the industry."

These are fair points as Cumberbatch already plays a sort of alien in Sherlock due to his obscure personality on the series and could translate that obscurity to the role of Martian Manhunter who is a very similar character in that they are unorthodox detectives.

Having this role would also enter Cumberbatch into the superhero game without having to worry about carrying his own franchise. He would probably have a solo movie, depending on how the character tested in Justice League, but not the requirement that Doctor Strange or other roles would require.

Justice League is expected to come out in 2017.
