HBO frequently blends fiction with fact when it comes to the prohibition drama Boardwalk Empire, but as the series continued with its fifth and final season on Sunday, even the contemporary media found itself a little star-struck.

Creator Reveals Why It Was Time To End 'Boardwalk Empire'

On Monday Variety revealed the story behind an interview given by the infamous Al Capone (Stephen Graham) during this week's episode.

On June 30, 1921 writer Lou Greenspan interviewed the real-life Capone for Variety for a story entitled "Capone Kids Gang Films". The piece discussed Capone's reaction to "gangster" films of the times.

'Boardwalk Empire' Star Dishes On The 'Role Of A Lifetime'

On the HBO series, this interview took place in Chicago and series creator and writer Terrence Winter revealed some of the dialogue was lifted right out of Greenspan's article.

The interview not only brings a piece of true history alive on the screen, it also helps reaffirm the timeline for Boardwalk Empire's fifth and final season.

Variety noted that the Greenspan interview took place only a few months before Capone was imprisoned for tax evasion. Recent photographs from the set of the HBO show confirm that Capone's trial will take place on the series. This means that the season will span quite a bit of time in its limited eight-episode run, stretching  a couple months before reaching the legendary trial.

One of the final scenes shot for the show included Capone standing out on the steps of the courthouse and so the trial will be set during the second half of the season, possibly even the series finale.

Boardwalk Empire continues on HBO with its fifth and final season Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
