Very little is known about Fish Mooney's (Jada Pinkett Smith) back story on Fox's Gotham, though the actress is teasing that an exploration into her past might be coming soon.

Smith spoke with Baltimore Sun about Fish Mooney and revealed that the mysterious character is hiding things from her past.

"I know, she does have a back story. That's another one that I don't want to kind of tip off or give away yet, because there will be an [episode] that will come out and reveal that," Smith said. "But she's definitely a woman who's had some trauma. I think that once people do get her back story, people will have a lot more understanding of who she is."

Smith has been noted for infusing Fish Mooney with a grand theatricality, which the actress says is intentional for the character as a coping mechanism.

"The one thing I will say is Fish's theatrics are [part of] this grandiose facade that she created to cover her ugly history and aspects of herself that she might not be very proud of," Smith explained. "[It's] also a defense mechanism, because no matter what room she's in, it's always her show. I think once people see what her back story is, people will understand why Fish Mooney carries such a fierce facade."

Fish's back story might be delved into further now that Gotham has revealed its latest big twist. In the latest episode, it was revealed that the Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) was working as an informant for Falcone (John Doman), with his latest piece of information being that Fish and Nikolai (Jeremy Davidson) had been conspiring to take Falcone out.

With Nikolai now dead, it puts Fish in a vulnerable position so fans may see some deeper layers to the character in the weeks to come.

Gotham airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
