While it isn't written in stone that the comic book movies have to follow the literature from which they came from, some recent activity in the comic book world could signal the end of one of the most famous characters in the movies today.

The 'X-Men' Franchise Could Be Getting This Team To Assemble For The Future

In a recent issue of X-Men, the fan-favorite character Wolverine perished, leaving a void in future issues. But could the movies follow this lead and end the run that Hugh Jackman has had with the role?

If the next movie decides to follow the comics, Wolverine could be re-invented as Weapon X or even be used as a Horseman of the Apocalypse depending on the route that director Bryan Singer and writer Simon Kinberg want to go.

Weapon X would allow Jackman to tread new territory with the role and this was hinted at during the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past when the past Wolverine was collected by William Stryker (or Mystique in disguise) and was heading to get his metal claws back, but with the past changed, it could also hint at him getting re-designed as Weapon X.

Now would that end with the death of the character? Highly unlikely. Jackman has already talked about his plans to shoot both Apocalypse and the third Wolverine movie back-to-back so unless they are going back in time again with the Wolverine film, it will probably take place in the present.

Not to say that this won't be considered in the future. Jackman has played the role for a long time now and maybe when he is done, instead of re-casting, Fox just kills off the role and waits some time. But for now, Jackman is pretty locked in with the franchise and is a crucial piece.
