"Personally, [it's been] really really hard," Kidman told The Guardian on Saturday. "My family underwent a massive tragedy. So not my favorite year."

The "tragedy" the actress spoke of was the death of her father, Dr. Antony Kidman, who passed away while visiting Nicole's sister back in August.

Nicole had been incredibly close with her father and took the loss hard. Urban immediately cancelled his touring commitments and the married stars hurried back to Australia with their two young daughters to be with Nicole's family.

"I try not to be ungrateful," added Nicole. "I'm grateful to be alive."

Urban and Nicole have had a busy year professionally. Urban is up for two Grammy Awards this year, Best Country Solo Performance for Cop Car and Best Country Group Performance for Raise 'Em Up.

Nicole saw three of her movies released in theatres. The first was the Hollywood biopic Grace of Monaco, which came out in February. This past fall the thriller Before I Go To Sleep hit theatres, with the family film Paddington had its UK release last week.

"My whole career is always a roller-coaster," Nicole told The Guardian. "I'm so random and spontaneous and unusual in my choices. I never expected anything."

The actress's latest project is Strangerland, which also stars Hugo Weaving (Lord Of The Rings) and Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare In Love). Production is scheduled to take place in Australia, which will also give Kidman time to spend with her widowed mother.

"We've gone through a really tough time this year as a family," declared Nicole. "It's so nice to be able to take care of each other."

Nicole and Urban continue to live in Nashville with their two young daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret.
