'Serial' Podcast Creator Talks About Season 1 Case & Her Personal Feelings Toward It

The spin-off from This American Life wrapped its 12-episode first season last week and NPR reported Tuesday that the podcast's creator Sarah Koenig set out to report and only to report.

Koenig stated that she wasn't expecting to receive all the press she did garner, but it did allow for her to remain diligent.

"It was just a constant reminder of how careful we needed to be," Koenig told Fresh Air's Terry Gross.

Serial was Koenig's reinvestigation into the murder of Hae Min Lee. The podcast, which aired weekly, presented detective interviews and excerpts of the trial, along with new interviews Koenig conducted with Adnan Syed, who was Lee's ex-boyfriend. He's currently serving time for her murder.

Koenig was upfront with Syed's supporters (his family and friends) in saying to them, "I'm not here to exonerate Adnan. I'm here to report this story. I don't know what I'm going to find, and I might find evidence that he's guilty, and we should all be prepared for that."

"We wanted it to feel like a live thing ... a vital thing in the sense of the word of being a living thing - as we went," Koenig revealed about the podcast. "And we were still reporting last week for the final episode."

Koenig shared that classmates of Lee and Syed have been in touch with her throughout the podcast and since it ended.

She said one person told her, "At least I know it wasn't just me being a teenager not understanding the world. ... There are a lot of people still who don't understand this - and I'm not alone in feeling this way."
