Avril Lavigne's engagement to Nickelback's Chad Kroeger has sparked a flood of hateful comments on Twitter. The couple got engaged on Aug. 8 but waited weeks later to announce their relationship to the public. While many comments on Lavigne's personal Twitter page seemed positive, fans have also expressed great mockery toward Lavigne and Kroeger, suggesting that they may even be more hated as a couple than Kim Kardashian and Kanye West.

"Kim and Kanye, look out. Your title as arguably the most hated celebrity couple has finally been toppled - and by a pair of Canadians, no less," The Guardian expressed in an article.

Lavigne, 27, and Kroeger, 37, affectionately dubbed "Chavril," had only dating for six months before they became engaged. The couple secretly dated, however, now that their relationship has become very public, much mockery has descended on the pair.

"Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger from Nickelback are getting married? I didn't know Canada allowed SAME SUCKS MARRIAGE," @Adam_Newman tweeted.

"Avril lavigne & chad kroeger (guy from nickelback) engaged..... Now they can make crappy annoying music together. Great for each other," @swellmary posted.

@wilnervison added, "Why is everyone freaking out about Chavril? This saves at least two other people from horrible relationships!"

According to People Magazine, the couple began dating while working on Lavigne's new album. The close friendship that was birthed blossomed into a private relationship between the two musicians.

"He makes her so happy," a family source said, according to Mercury News. "Both of their families could not be more excited."

This will be Lavigne's second marriage and Kroeger's first. The pop star was formerly married to Sum 41's Deryck Whibley for three years until their highly publicized divorce in 2009. Lavigne was later linked to reality star Brody Jenner before ending their relationship toward the beginning of the 2012. Despite the singer's history of love, Kroeger, along with his bandmates, seem at ease to move forward.

Lavigne's album is expected to be released by the end of the year.
