While Zoe Hart's pregnancy on Hart of Dixie might come as a surprise to some viewers, the show's creator said writing in the pregnancy as a result of actress Rachel Bilson's real life baby bump, is one of the best things that ever happened to for Zoe & Wade fans.

Leila Gerstein spoke with The Hollywood Reporter on December 15 and said it was the perfect thing to bring Zoe and Wade back together.

"It was certainly not in my [original] plan to write a pregnancy, but I think that the fact that Rachel was pregnant is the luckiest thing that happened.

It gave us a whole new way to tell this romantic comedy. It opened up this clear path for what the season was going to be [for Wade and Zoe]."

Still, Bilson is not the first actress to become pregnant while taping the hit series. Jaime King, who plays Lemon Breeland was also expecting during the third season. However, she took several episodes off in a leave of absence. But Gerstein decided to use Bilson's pregnancy to her advantage, especially for Zade fans.

"Once I made the decision to write in Rachel's pregnancy, it was clear that this was going to expedite Zoe and Wade being together. It was going to put their relationship on the fast track because [things] happen in life, and this was something that happened, and now they are going to have to figure it out.

They don't have time for the back and forth anymore; they have to figure it out. I thought that was a very exciting way to tell that story."

She added that they had to be clever when getting Zoe pregnant. So they had Zoe try to win Wade back (which makes sense because at the end of the third season she said she would fight for him) with romantic gestures. The two ended up being intimate on the fourth season opener, just before Zoe found out she was expecting. Interestingly enough, she had not been with anyone in awhile, so it was made clear that Wade was the father.

See how it all plays out on Hart of Dixie Fridays at 8/7c on the CW.
