Several premiere artists at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards knocked the roof off of the Los Angeles' Staples Center on Thursday night.  The lyrical achievement festivities included a slew of ground-breaking performances by many of the biggest names in the industry today, which included Pink, Green Day, Rihanna and Taylor Swift.

Comedian Kevin Hart was also on hand to host and entertain the masses for the event.  The newest Los Angeles Lakers basketball star Dwight Howard had even showed up to say hello to his newest fans.

The yearly ceremony takes place annually in mid-September and is shown live.  The program had been originally created as an alternate show for the Grammys, but by 2001, the VMA's had become a premiere awards show thrown for the best musical performers of the year.

The VMA's have continued to receive special notoriety, as MTV has consistently gotten together some of the finest artists and bands.  For quite some time, the show has been notable for its live moments of controversy and its sharp increase in popularity can be a testament to that.
