Jessica Simpson did not wear a bikini during her much publicized post-baby body reveal on Katie Couric's new talk show; however, her four-month-old daughter Maxwell did.

The celebrity mom showed her baby girl wearing a mustard-colored, crocheted two-piece bathing suit.

When the image went viral on the Internet, many viewers gave their opinions on the choice of outfit made by Simpson, who lives in Los Angeles with her fiance, Eric Johnson, 32.

Simpson, a singer/fashion designer, probably didn't realize the photo would be controversial.

"It is very disturbing to see a young baby presented to the world wearing a bikini," said Claude Knight of The Daily Mail, director of charity Kidscape. "Celebrity choices carry great influence, as can be seen by the manner in which their accessories and manners are copied widely."

Knight is worried that parents will follow Simpson's lead.

"It is to be hoped that parents will understand that 'baby bikinis' are totally inappropriate, and that they contribute to the sexualisation and commercialisation of childhood. We should not be compromising the sanctity of our children's early years," she said.

On Twitter, viewers also criticized Simpson's style choice.

"Jessica Simpson posts a photo of her 4-month-old baby in a BIKINI - wrong wrong wrong," wrote one crtiic. Another added, "A baby in a bikini?! Dear God, some people are just wrong!"

A third person commented, "I just saw the most ridiculously posed photo of Jessica Simpson's baby in a bikini. Just awful. Poor poppet."

On "Katie," Simpson spoke of how much she loved being a parent, calling motherhood "a dream" and "absolutely amazing," according to Celebuzz

Simpson's rep did not give a comment to the site on the bikini backlash.
