Fans are still reeling from the news that Sister Wives star Kody Brown divorced first wife Meri and married fourth wife Robyn last year, and many are still wondering why exactly such a monumental change within the family occurred.

Though the family has hinted that the reasons for the change will play out during upcoming episodes of their hint show, fans are dying for answers much earlier than they expect to get them, and several theories have floated around as to why things happened.

Here are three possible reasons why Kody and Meri may have divorced-and why Robyn became the new legal wife.

Kody and Meri Divorce Shocker!

1. Insurance Purposes For Robyn's Kids

Robyn came into the family and her initial marital commitment with three children from a previous marriage-Dayton, Aurora and Breanna. Considering Dayton's various medical issues, there's a possibility that Kody married Robyn to ensure her children could be as equally protected as Kody's other kids-something they may not have been granted because they weren't legally considered his stepchildren when his marriage to Robyn was just one conducted in the spiritual sense. Since his other children are his biologically, and could be protected as his dependents on health insurance no matter if he is legally married to their mothers, the decision to legally marry Robyn could have been to give the other kids as much equal time as possible.

2. Meri Requested It

Meir has been hinting her unhappiness in her marriage for a while, so she may have very well decided to try being the wife who wasn't legally attached to Kody anymore. In fact, she's even defending Kody and Robyn against those who are criticizing them and claiming they pulled a fast one on her.

3. Robyn Is Pregnant

There could very well be a chance that Robyn is once again carrying the next Brown child (a rumor that has constantly plagued her for a year). Meri was unable to conceive after Mariah, and Janelle and Christine already have six kids each with Kody. In addition, Robyn is the youngest of the wives-and most likely to be the one to carry another child. Though she already had a son with Kody when they first married, the fact that she may be the only one bearing him children over the next few years could have prompted the decision for a restructuring of the family.
