The Night Shift will get a whole new look at life when Joey Chavez joins the San Antonio Memorial ER.

A former member of the Air Force pararescue, Chavez (Adam Rodriguez) will fit right in with a staff primarily culled from the military. An Iraqi War past won't be the only thing Chavez has in common with his coworkers, he will also have traumatic past. After all, it's practically a requirement when applying for a place on the night shift.

"He's had some personal lows from family things that have happened - I don't want to give away too much, you're going to see it in the show - but he's lost some people that were as close as you can possibly be to somebody," Rodriguez told Screen Slam.

In light of this, the new doc will take a more "new age" approach to his life, trying to keep some zen in the midst of the ER chaos. While some of this mindset will filter into his medicine, another part will mark him as the only one who brings a skateboard to work.

"I think he's trying to get his life back together and part of putting his life back together is taking a new approach and that is a "new age" approach with an Eastern philosophy that he's now applied to Western medicine," Rodriguez explained, according to Screen Slam. "He's really into yoga and nutrition and keeping a very zen attitude towards all the things that get thrown your way as a doctor and just as a human being."
