With three seasons under its belt, Longmire seems to be doing wonders for the western genre.

'Longmire' Star Talks 'New Challenges' For Season 4

Production begins in New Mexico this month for the show's fourth season and according to the Orange County Register on Feb. 27, the series might just be more than a popular program.

The Register claimed that the series is in fact modernizing the western genre, blending elements of the Midwest, the standard crime procedural, and sophisticated storytelling to create something entirely new. The series both revives what is considered by some to be an outdated genre while at the same time exploring territories which have often been overlooked by television.

Longmire's ties to the Native American community alone have made the series unique among dramatic television, diversifying a medium which has rarely bothered to look at the country's oldest residents.

The show is forging its own path and being rewarded for the risks it takes.

The crime drama had quite a year in 2014, facing permanent cancellation after A&E decided not to renew the series for a fourth season. Fans eagerly jumped to the show's aid, launching social media campaigns to revive their beloved program. All that dedication seemed to work, because in November Netflix stepped in and ordered a new season of the series as part of its original programming lineup.

Longmire will likely return for a fourth season on Netflix during the later half of 2015.
