After months of trying, photographers finally caught a glimpse of Jennifer Aniston's engagement ring, and it's enormous.

The eight-carat, emerald-cut diamond ring she received from fiancé Justin Theroux is gigantic, but some jewelry designers are saying it's actually too big, which makes it look gaudy rather than elegant.

One style expert talked with The Daily Mail and said the ring looks a bit overwhelming on Aniston's hand.

"Jennifer's engagement ring is valuable, for sure, but a stone that size is not exactly sophisticated," the jewelry expert said. "In fact, one might argue that it is downright gaudy. It looks like it belongs on the hand of a Real Housewife. I love Jennifer's clean and elegant aesthetic, but this ring is completely at odds with that."

Jewelry designer David Nygaard told E! Online that in his experience, any size diamond can work as long as the ring is smartly designed.

"The challenge with a large diamond, or any gem, is the design," he says. "Yes, sure, some stones are pendant stones, but I've never found that a stone on its own can be too big for a hand."

But in Nygaard's opinion, the design on Aniston's ring wasn't right for such a gigantic diamond.

"As it is, it may just be unbalanced, a little bulky looking, not pleasing aesthetically. I would have made the band, or the shank, of the ring a little larger, or maybe a split shank," Nygaard said. "After all, today, with so many custom design options available and computer-assisted design, you can have your ring exactly as you want it."

Shock at the sheer size of Aniston's stone has been the general reaction to the engagement ring, which photographers had to wait two months to see following Theroux's proposal Aug. 10. The Huffington Post described the ring this way: "Now that we've seen the actual engagement ring in it's full glory, we have to say we're impressed. Who knew Justin had such luxurious tastes? The rock practically takes over half of her finger."
