The FX southern crime drama series Justified is officially over, having aired its series finale Tuesday night.

Sam Elliott Discusses Markham's Reasoning For Staying In Harlan On 'Justified'

The episode ended in a bittersweet way, seeing as the three leads, Raylan (Timothy Olyphant), Ava (Joelle Carter) and Boyd (Walton Goggins), all managed to survive in the end.

Ava broke free and wound up pregnant with Boyd's son and there was a time jump, which showed Ava vowing to never let Boyd know of their child and Raylan offered his services to her to make sure that the child stays a secret.

Boyd ended up in jail so Raylan paid him a visit and told him Ava died in a car crash.

Boyd and Raylan have experienced a complicated history since the series debuted in March 2010, but it all goes back to them digging coal together since Boyd asked Raylan why he would tell him that Ava's dead in person.

"We dug coal together," was Raylan's response.

So, Graham Yost who brought Justified to life revealed to Entertainment Weekly his thoughts and feelings about the series finale.

On Tuesday after the episode aired, the site shared that Yost said it was up to Raylan about whether Boyd would live or not.

It actually had influence from the pilot episode.

"What would he have done with Tommy Bucks if Tommy Bucks hadn't drawn? And in this case Boyd's got a gun but he refuses to pull, so it's kind of this same situation," Yost dished.

Boyd lived; granted he ended up in jail, but he remained alive and the show's creator said, "Sometimes the bad guy dies and sometimes he doesn't, and it depends who it is."

Boyd has done many morally questionable things, but he and Raylan have a history together and it all tied together nicely in the end.

Yost claimed they wanted to "bring the whole series full circle."

Justified aired its final season on FX at 10 p.m. ET on Tuesday nights.
