Roberto Kelly found out that baseball can be a dangerous game.

The San Francisco Giants first-base coach suffered a concussion after being struck by a line drive to the head.

The accident occurred on Saturday during batting practice when Buster Posey hit Kelly with the ball. Kelly was standing around second base when Kelly's hit sent the baseball into the back of the coach's head.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Posey was unaware Kelly was even hit.

"I saw him on the ground like everybody else, I didn't see it hit him," Posey said. "Any time somebody gets hit in the head you're worried for them."

The team assisted Kelly off the practice field to check his condition.

Posey continued: "He seemed to be doing all right. He was cognizant and answering questions. I think any time with a head injury it is scary because you just can't take anything for granted with that, and you have to be really, really careful."

Kelly was later taken to a San Francisco hospital where doctors confirmed he had a concussion.

The concussion had forced Kelly to stay out of Game 1 of the NL Championship Series between the Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals.

Kelly has had an accomplished career in baseball. He spent 14 seasons playing for eight major league teams. He's held his current position of first-base coach for the Giants since 2008.

The concussion is expected to keep Kelly off the field until Game 3 in St. Louis.

"He's at home, he's resting well [but] he didn't sleep much last night," Manager Bruce Bochy said on Sunday before the first game. "He hasn't come in yet. Dave Groeschner, our trainer, and I were hoping he could come in so they could check him out again."

Until Kelly returns, Joe Lefebvre has taken over as first-base coach during the championship games.
