The back half of Awkward's upcoming fifth and final season are set to catch up with the Palos Hills gang after everyone finishes their freshman year in college--but Jenna Hamilton may shock her former high school friends when she comes back to town with a drastically different look.

Jonathan Bennett Joins 'Awkward' Cast

Ashley Rickards, who portrays the high school senior and writer, posted a photo of what appeared to be a new haircut on her Instagram page over the weekend--where she appears to be sporting a new bob with bangs--something drastically different from her usual long locks.

 For the love of bob..

"For the love of bob," she captioned the photo.

Fans speculated on the photo, saying they believed it might be a wig because of how shiny the hair appears to be in the photo--but fake or not, it could be a hint of how Jenna may change while in college.

Could 'Awkward' Actually Be Renewed Despite Season 5 Series Finale Announcement?

The timing of Rickards' photo also came shortly after the announcement that Mean Girls star Jonathan Bennett had signed onto the show for its back-half, as Ethan, a sharp, articulate, late-20s wordsmith whom Jenna meets while working at her summer job.

There has been no confirmation on how senior year at Palos Hills will close out beyond the group going through usual rites of passage, including prom and graduation--and it is currently unclear if Jenna and Matty (Beau Mirchoff) will reunite and truly fix their romance before going their separate ways for college.

Awkward season 5 premieres August 31 on MTV.
