On Friday, The Charleston Daily Mail reported that a West Virginia high school teacher is claiming not to have known that Fifty Shades of Grey was a sexually charged film when they showed it in their classroom.

The request was reportedly made by a group of Hampshire County students who asked their teacher if they could watch it as "a reward for good work."

"Fortunately, an assistant principal walked by and saw what they were doing," said school principal Jeff Woofter. "They got there 10 minutes after it started and shut it down."

The county school policy prohibits students from watching movies of any kind in the classroom, let alone rated R movies.

"I will say it was an extreme lack of judgment from an otherwise very capable teacher," Woofter said. "The teacher didn't do a background check on the movie or even ask about it."

Woofter also said that he couldn't discuss whether or not disciplinary action would be taken against the teacher or the students.

The movie is based on an erotic fan fiction novel that is not a trilogy. It's most notable for its explicit and ciolent descriptions of sexual bondage, but has sold over 100 million copies around the world.
