The Vampire Diaries concluded its sixth season Thursday night!

Nina Dobrev Shares Messy, Yet Fun 'Caked' Photos From Final Day On Set Of 'The Vampire Diaries'

It was quite the emotional finale episode as viewers and select characters, including Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Tyler (Michael Trevino), said their goodbyes to Elena (Nina Dobrev).

In a surprising twist, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) returned to Mystic Falls and Elena did not actually die like many assumed based off the promos for the finale, but she is in a deep sleep courtesy of Kai (Chris Wood) casting a spell that links her to Bonnie (Kat Graham).

'The Vampire Diaries' Creator Admits To Trying To Get Nina Dobrev To Stay On The Series

For as long as Bonnie lives Elena will be in a slumber.

It is the typical supernatural stuff happening in Mystic Falls obviously.

With that being said, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) clearly had to make peace with losing Elena for the time being, which seemed okay considering he prevented Bonnie from dying at Kai's will, which in turn prevented Elena from waking.

The showrunners, Caroline Dries and Julie Plec, revealed Season 7 will be a rough ride for Damon though without Elena by his side.

In the video below that The CW Television Network YouTube channel released Thursday night after the finale aired Plec dished, "We'll get to see how Damon Salvatore is surviving without the love of his life."

"It's not gonna be pretty," she added.

Does this mean Damon will be out of control? We hope not! Hopefully his brother will be able to help keep him in check along with Bonnie.

Season 7 of the supernatural series returns this fall to The CW.

Dries and Plec "are excited" for their viewers to tune into the next chapter.
