It's never easy for a minor to emanicipate from a parent who just isn't fit, but Ariel Winter has done just that and is now thanking her support system.

On Friday, People reported that the actress is officially an emancipated minor.

Like any modern-day teenager does, she immediately took to Twitter to confirm the news and thank those who have support her along the way.

"I am now officially emancipated!!! I'm really lucky I have an amazing support system and lovely people in my life who have given me the support and guidance to have been given this wonderful opportunity," she wrote.

The 17-year-old star went on to thank her old sister who took over legal guardianship of her in 2012 after the Department of Children and Family Services stepped up.

The department reportedly found evidence that her mom, Chrisoula Workman, was emotionally abusing her.

"Most importantly I want to thank @shanelle_gray and my father for their special support regarding this matter, I really couldn't have done it without them. Thank you to all of my family, friends, and fans who have supported me through all of my endeavors in life, and have encouraged me. Thank you for making my life so special! I can't wait to embark on my new adventures," she continued in the tweet.

People reported on the abuse in 2012 when it came to light, saying that her mother's attorney fought for her to continue to have guardianship.

"We implore the court to send the kid to her dad," Workman's attorney, Anita Gumm, stated. "Being a controlling mother doesn't mean [my client] is unfit."

The only comment her mom could provide at the time of the hearing was: "I love my daughter and I just want our family to be back together."
