Voting Hours, Officials Help NY & NJ Sandy Victims Cast Ballots
Americans are urged to cast their ballots on Tuesday for the 2012 presidential election, and for those who were hit hard by Hurricane Sandy, officials are providing means for residents to reach designated polling sites.
Officials in New Jersey delivered voting equipment to emergency shelters so voters displaced by the hurricane could cast ballots, according to NBC. New York City arranged for shuttle buses to provide transportation for some residents in areas hit hard by the storm. The buses will run every 15 minutes to take Sandy victims to polling sites.
Polling places in New York open at 6 a.m. and will remain open until 9 p.m. Residents can only vote at their designated polling place and Election District/Assembly District (ED/AD) for their address, however, in light of Sandy's effect on the East Coast, the New York City Board of Elections announced that they would temporary relocate or combine some poll site locations across the five boroughs. They recommend New Yorkers to check the poll site locator to verify their poll site location.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order Monday allowing residents to cast provisional ballots at any polling place in the state for president and statewide office holders. The ballots are counted after officials confirm a voter's eligibility.
In Staten Island, officials had to bring the voting machines out from Public School 52, which still has no electricity. Police helped poll workers set the machines up in tents, and heaters were stacked on the tables. Voters lined up in the dark and 29 degrees weather starting at 6 a.m., according to The Associated Press.
Many in New Jersey still have no power eight days after Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast. In Ocean County, officials hired campers to deliver mail-in ballots to shelters.
New Jersey currently has 2.6 million unaffiliated voters, 1.8 million democrats and 1.1 million Republicans. Additionally, 3,888 voters belong to third parties, including the Libertarian and Green parties, according to The Star-Ledger.
