Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be a more psychological kind of superhero movie, at least according to star Jesse Eisenberg.

Michael Shannon Talks About Returning As General Zod For 'Batman v Superman'

Eisenberg, who plays the villainous Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman, spoke with Observer recently and revealed how superhero movies have changed since the 1980s.

The actor discussed Superman's (Henry Cavill) rise to power and suggested that the psychological implications of this will be explored in the movie.

Jena Malone's Mystery 'Batman v Superman' Role Finally Revealed

"Now people expect the tone to be more realistic just because we live in a world where the average audience member has a sense of psychological motivations... [It raises the question] how can one man-Superman-have so much power?" Eisenberg said. "These are the kind of things that we talk about when we think about authoritarian states, when we talk about Vladimir Putin having a strong foothold in Eastern Europe. They're addressing geopolitics in this movie and not in a way that's pretentious or esoteric."

Director Zack Snyder's intention for Man of Steel, the movie that directed preceded Batman v Superman, was clearly one of seriousness. While Superman has often been depicted as an unambiguous force of good with very little below the surface (at least in film depictions), Man of Steel explored his alien ways and how his choices have consequences, and potentially dangerous ones at that.

That will continue to be explored in Batman v Superman as we've seen from the trailer, which shows Metropolis still recovering from the events at the end of Man of Steel.

Whether Batman v Superman will live up to the gritty realism of its intentions remains to be seen.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be released in theaters on March 25, 2016.
