How will Michael Shannon figure into Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice after the events of Man of Steel?

Why Is Ben Affleck's Batman So Bulked Up for 'Batman v Superman'?

SPOILERS FOR MAN OF STEEL and BATMAN v SUPERMAN below:

Those who saw Man of Steel will remember that Shannon's character General Zod was killed by Superman (Henry Cavill) at the end of the film. So why is he set to return in Batman v Superman?

Shannon spoke to his character's return with CinemaBlend, teasing that he is essentially a ghost.

Is Jesse Eisenberg Not Actually Playing Lex Luthor In 'Batman v Superman'?

"Yeah, I say some stuff," Shannon said, when asked if he had any lines in the new movie. "But not a whole lot! I mean, I am dead. [Laughs] ... I'm just like a ghost. It's kind of like Russell Crowe in the first one. Jor-El. For some reason, these Kryptonian spirits, they linger. Even once you crack my neck, you can't shut me up."

One can only assume that the ghost of General Zod may haunt Superman in the 2016 blockbuster, considering the latter was racked with guilt upon killing him.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice also stars Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jr., Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent and Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth. Other stars include Scoot McNairy, Jena Malone and Callen Mulvey, with cameo performances from Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Ray Fisher as Cyborg.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is scheduled for release in theaters on March 25, 2016.
