The Vampire Diaries winter finale did not disappoint as it was filled with twists and shocks nobody probably saw coming!

Is There Enough 'Common Ground' Presently For A 'Vampire Diaries' & 'Originals' Crossover To Happen Soon?

Nora (Scarlett Byrne) seemed to be moving on from Mary Louise (Teressa Liane) with the help of Bonnie (Kat Graham), but as soon as Stefan (Paul Wesley) orchestrated a plan to use Mary Louise as leverage against Julian (Todd Lasance), Nora went back to being on the side of the evil heretics since Julian manipulated her.

The biggest shocks from the winter finale episode though is that not only is Julian still roaming around freely, but Stefan and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) were stabbed with the sword that's connected to the phoenix stone, which means they got locked away similarly to how Julian once was locked away.

Could Jodi Lyn O'Keefe Return To 'The Vampire Diaries' In Future Episodes?

Where do things go from here? Well, the series returns in 2016 on its new night of Fridays come Jan. 29 and the older Salvatore sibling will be out of the stone's confines so perhaps Bonnie and Valerie (Elizabeth Blackmore) will be to thank for that.

The CW Television Network's YouTube channel released a preview of what viewers can expect upon the show's return next month in the episode called "Hell Is Other People," which can be viewed below.

"Damon, you've been dead for three months," Bonnie reveals to a newly awakened Damon in the preview below.

In another scene, Damon asks, "Where's Stefan?" which leads Julian to seek vengeance. He has Stefan's body and appears to plan on torching it.

"If Julian scorches Stefan's body we can't get him back!" Caroline shouts.

It looks like they'll get Stefan back, but Damon will certainly start to go mad thanks to being locked away in the prison world of the phoenix stone sword as he harms Caroline.

The Vampire Diaries will return on its new night, Friday, January 29, 2016 at 8 p.m. ET.
