100,000 Killer Bees Attack Park Employees in Florida Rodney Pugh and David Zeledon, [Video]
Two park employees in Tampa, Fla., were operating a front-end loader, clearing trash when they overturned an old truck tire, unknowingly disturbing a bee colony and were quickly surrounded by 100,000 angry bees.
The insects were believed to be Africanized honeybees and Rodney Pugh and David Zeledon of Picnic Island Park had to go to the hospital. Despite the intensity of the swarm, suffering almost 100 bee stings each, they are both expected to fully recover despite.
"Like a thousand little knives poking me in my body," is how Pugh described the stings to ABC Action News. He also reportedly said that medical staff removed more than 60 stingers from his body and the bees chased him 75 feet down the road.
According to WFLA, Zeledon said, "There was so many, that I don't know what to do. I freak out. The first time in two years I got afraid."
Bee removal company Insect I-Q will remove the hive, according to the news report. Jason Deeringer of Insect I-Q explained that Africanized honeybees always fight back when provoked, it's in their genetics.
"They're just that mean," he said.
