A 37-pound cat named Biscuit living in a Missouri animal shelter found a new home this week.

The St. Charles Animal Control Shelter announced that Biscuit will handed over to Ed and Lisa Pyatt of Eureka, according to The Inquisitr. Biscuit cat will join the couple's other cat, Max.

"We adopted Max from the Humane Society about five years ago, and he needs a buddy," Ed told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "Biscuit will be a perfect friend for him."

Biscuit drew national attention last week when the shelter shared his story. Adoption offers began pouring in for the cat as the story of his weight struggles and need for a new home touched the lives of many animal lovers.

Biscuit found himself at the shelter for a second time when his caretaker, a disabled woman, could no longer look after him. His former owner had caused his weight to increase to nearly three times the average size of an adult cat.

"She didn't mean the cat any harm," Teresa Gilley, the shelter's lead animal control officer, said. "I just think she didn't know any better."

Officials of the St. Charles County shelter said recent news coverage of Biscuit's journey led to more than 100 adoption requests for him.

Gilley said Biscuit does not love his new low-calorie diet but he was starting to adjust when his new owners adopted him. When he first arrived to the shelter, Biscuit could only take a few steps before lying down and panting. Although he was immediately put on a strict diet, shelter workers shared concerns that the 37-pound cat's weight issues would make it difficult to place him in a suitable home.

Ed said the couple is unable to have children and instead they focus their love on their pets.

"Max pretty much rules the roost at our house; it's a big house, and he has beds all over the place. We're going to take good care of Biscuit too," he said.
